As we wave goodbye to the end of Brat summer, Djanaba is welcoming us into her electronic pop world with her debut album, Did I Stutter?. Featuring thirteen pure anthems of growth, empowerment, and merely figuring out your place in this chaotic world, the proud Queer Bundjalung pop artist is ready to take over your playlists and your hearts.
Djanaba shares that Did I Stutter? is above anything she “ever thought (she) could create”, with breakout hits including fan favourite ‘Big Titties’ and the ever energetic ‘Stutter’ featuring Somber Hills. This album follows Djanaba’s venture into adulthood, a journey that “hasn’t been easy, and it definitely hasn’t been cheap”, with gems of wisdom and echoes of empowerment that you wish you could send to your teenage self.
Opening with the relatable ‘Times Like SIS’, Djanaba establishes that Did I Stutter? is an album that stands as a survival guide to ones early twenties. ‘fuckitup’ and ‘F.U.’ stand as empowering dance floor bangers, channeling the diva energy of Haiku Hands and feeding audiences a dosage of unbridled confidence.
The lead album single ‘Doin To Me’ is representative of the growth Djanaba has undergone throughout this album process, as this was an early track in her journey into electronic music. Written at just 19, she describes ‘Doin To Me’ as “quite unserious and not over complicated”, whilst sharing that this track “was the first moment (she) genuinely felt like (she) had made something beautiful”. ‘Doin To Me’ was produced by PNAU, similarly to ‘Big Titties’, proving that Djanaba has always been surrounded by some of the best in the scene.
Did I Stutter? progresses with the empowering ‘Way We Move’ and introspective ‘Dig Me Out’, balancing self-reflection with dance pop bangers including ‘Broke Back Bitch’ and ‘Don’t Really Care’. ‘I’m Ready’ stands out as my personal favourite of the album, with smooth verses and a punchy, high energy chorus, making it a go-to pump up song for your next pregame. Closing the album with the certified baddie anthem ‘Asikee’, Djanaba confirms that she’s making music for the Certified Bad Bitches.
Did I Stutter? is the electronic pop album that I wish I had growing up. Djanaba brings a refreshing perspective to the traditionally male dominated soundtrack of this genre, giving a voice to those who have previously been overlooked or underappreciated on the dancefloor. Further, Djanaba has compiled the mix tape to compliment our modern day lives, with moments of introspect, anthems for the “baddie gurrllsss”, and tracks for your next night out on the town.
