FANGZ Sink In Deep With Illuminating New Single, ‘Self Medicate’

Following the whirlwind of their critically praised second EP, ‘But No Thanks’, and the equally as spiralling time of Covid and isolation, FANGZ have not merely continued to grow as a band through the chaos, but have polished their sound, and have dug deeper into their artistry to create an unmistakable connection with every listener.

Their latest single, ‘Self Medicate’ propels the band into a new realm of vulnerability and honesty through an all too familiar topic for many; the conflicts in which anxiety raises, and the internal struggles between self-care or substance abuse as a silencer. Even rawer to this idea is the story from which this track stemmed from.

“In particular, this song was written after one night in Brisbane. I had Jägermeister for breakfast and vodka for dinner. At the time I was dealing with a lot of changes in life and felt like I was continuously putting on an act. It all came to a head onstage that night…I forgot how to play our set, couldn’t tune my guitar and drunkenly lashed out at my band mates. I quit the band that night only to wake up on Sunday and sheepishly apologise to everyone in a Hungry Jacks in Grafton. On Monday, I went to the doctor and got a referral to see a psychologist.” says bassist and co-lyricist Jameel Majam

Through the capturing vocals of Josh Cottreau, powerful and evocative lyrics, and of course, the statement instrumentals of FANGZ, the track becomes an anthemic ballad, marching everyone onto a better path. Truly, the instrumentals, in all their chaos and fluctuating power, layers and sound aim to capture the confusion, internal struggle, and panic such events evoke.

‘Self Medicate’ is a testament to not only FANGZ’s ability to share stories through their most powerful medium, but their ability to be vulnerable and honest to the listeners surrounding them.

To celebrate the release of the new track, FANGZ have announced a five-date tour across NSW, ACT and QLD, including a performance at Inverted Festival
