Sunshine Coast sweetheart, Chris Ah Gee has released his latest track after 6 years of radio silence. 'It's About Time' reinvents soul music with meaty rap sections, heart-melting crooner hooks and bone-tingling funky McBeats in-between. Just look at this Steeze Muffin - how could you say no to those puppy dog eyes?
To support the release of this slick track, Chris is taking to the stage this weekend at the Caloundra Music Festival. Featuring an impressive stacked line-up of some of the biggest names right now, including Ball Park Music, WAAX, SAMETIME, SNEAKY SOUND SYSTEM, JaZZella, John Butler & Jaguar Jonze (Just to name a few!) This festival is running from the 1st - 3rd of October, with Chris' set scheduled for Sunday and features a hot & throbbing full 7-piece band.
'It's About Time' is the perfect song to listen to whilst strutting down the street - be warned that it is highly infectious, and symptoms include rabid swaying, hip gyrations and swelling of the fingers caused by clicking to the beat. Seek immediate medical attention if you begin tapping at the toes. Musically, it begins with a rap section with flows reminiscent of Kendrick. From here we journey to the center of the Soul, with 70's-style falsettos & Bikini Bottom pineapple flavoured guitar licks.
The song took shape in Chris Ah Gee's bedroom, before plunging into the studio at Yama Nui Recording Studios (responsible for the likes of Ziggy Alberts, Bobby Alu, Andrea Kirwin and JaZZella - the latter two whom are also playing at Caloundra Music Fest!) The track was originally conceived in 2020 during the peak of the pandemic, using the time productively & wisely. It is a positive song, about aspirations & perseverance, with Chris stating:
“The song begins with the brief outlook from a musician who has devoted a large part of their life to the craft of performing and songwriting. Being an artist throughout these rapidly changing times can be difficult, rather than feel intimidated by the industry or entitled to some sort of fame or reward, I find myself invigorated and inspired by the current music climate and community.”
'It's About Time' is the first track to be released from Chris' upcoming Neo-Soul album, with more on the way slated for the future, so be sure to keep your ears peeled.
