Sometimes an album truly resonates with you in a way you could never imagine before. Milk Pool, the sophomore album from the beloved Naarm (Melbourne) based artist Merpire is a pure example of this phenomenon, standing as a new and exciting body of work that carries all the warmth of a hug from an old friend. With nostalgic, 90’s coming-of-age movie energy and the confessional lyricism of a deeply hidden teenage diary, Milk Pool is here to stay in your regular rotation and soundtrack your most significant experiences.

Milk Pool starts with an all-consuming crush, as detailed through the charming ‘Leaving With You’, ‘Premonition’, and ‘Bigger’, instantly establishing a cathartic connection with audiences through vivid lyricism that evokes a whirlwind of daydreams. Merpire delves deeply into introspection with the delicate nature of tracks like ‘Rosanna’, ‘Cinnamon’, ‘fig.8’ and ‘Canine’, with lyrical maturity reflecting on the weight of lived experiences.

The album reaches a point of pure joy with the lead single ‘Fishing’, where Merpire shares her abundant love for her friends, opening with the lyrics “I’m just a little bit in love with all of my friends”. On Milk Pool, Merpire shares “Milk Pool has served my needs to express myself and my experiences. It is now literally “released” as an open gift for whoever wants to listen to explore their own meanings and emotions”.

The homeliness of ‘Retriever’ feels almost like a warm and sobering return to one’s roots, contrasted by the lightness and emotional reservation of ‘Internet’. Milk Pool closes with the tender, acoustic ‘You Are Loved’, a track which ties together the whirlwind of emotions throughout the album in an identity affirming manner.

Milk Pool feels deeper than just an album. It's an experience, of falling in love and finding yourself amongst the chaos of the world. Of lingering glances and that face that races through your mind every night without fail. Of knowing that you’re not alone in the heaviest moments you face. Instrumental sections full of catharsis emulate the moment one breaks away from the noise and chases their destiny at full speed. Merpire has crafted a truly transportative body of work that tugs on each and every heartstring. Milk Pool can not be truly enjoyed merely in passing, I implore you to sit with this and soak in each song and every witty lyrical phrase.

Merpire is hosting a series of intimate celebrations for Milk Pool, with solo shows and Q&A sessions across the East Coast. Our local celebration show will be hosted at The Junk Bar on the 15th of August, tickets available now!
