Pond Are Back With Brand New Single 'Pink Lunettes'

The Perth psych phenomenon that is Pond have today unveiled their latest single 'Pink Lunettes'. The single marks their first new music since the release of their last studio album Tasmania in 2019. In the same year they also released the live album Sessions.

'Pink Lunettes' is a synth-fuelled rager, with a pulsing new wave beat and eccentric vocals from frontman Nick Allbrook delivering bizarre, cryptic lyrics. It sounds kinda like Michael Jackson's 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'' if you put it in a blender and then seasoned it with Pond's trademark psychedelia and penchant for the left-field.

It's yet another evolution for the band, who with their last few releases have ventured further into pop and electronic-based psychedelia, deviating from the classic electric guitar-heavy psych rock that they became renowned for with their early releases in the late '00s and early '10s.

“I think we managed to jitter along the neon tightrope between totally unhinged, strobing spontaneity and focused forward momentum,” says Allbrook of the track.

The song is also accompanied by a Jamie Terry & Pond co-directed visualizer which features a hazy, lo-fi videotape of a wild solo performance by Allbrook.

'Pink Lunettes' is most likely a teaser track from a bigger upcoming project. Pond have been spending the lockdown period recording new music. It's been just over two years since the release of Tasmania, which for a band as prolific as these guys is just about the longest time they've gone between studio releases. It's all pointing to a brand new Pond album that we should have our hands on sometime soon.

In the meantime, though, if you're lucky enough to live in the band's home state of Western Australia, you can catch them at any of the four shows they'll be playing in Perth, Bunbury and Margaret River throughout April and early May.
