Q&A - 'We've Got The Numbers' Melbourne's Mijo Calls for Revolution

“We’ve got the numbers to put them out on the street”.

Reflecting on this theme, Melbourne musician Mijo was struck that, “Human advancement is awash with stories of independent thinking individuals, collaborating with like-minded freedom seekers to usher in positive change. It's really the only thing that has ever done the job.”

Mijo is willing to go the extra mile for his craft. Eager to push the concept of solitude as a pathway to inspiration, he travelled to Iceland where he stayed alone in a remote weatherboard cabin, surrounded by mountains and a breathtaking fjord. “It was dead quiet. Shockingly quiet,” he said. “In the midst of the silence, the only thing I could hear were my innermost thoughts waiting to manifest into new songs.” His month-long songwriting retreat formed the genesis for a creative shift.

He has now released his third single 'We’ve Got The Numbers' which explores notions of freedom and collective power against dictatorship, toppling the barriers from the first moments, this anti-authoritarian anthem delivers an empowering reminder that we are more powerful than we might think and attempts to break through the illusion that we are unable to enact change.

“Moody, heartbreaking, stunning, f#$king epic.” - Beat Magazine

“Well made stuff, especially with that very lively rush of harmonies and sunny guitars.” - Dave Ruby Howe (triple j)

Right now the world needs the human race to evolve, take more care and unite towards a mutually beneficial future. Mijo shares with us his top 5 quotes to inspire us to consider the nature of revolution and how it can be accomplished in a peaceful way that challenges the established norms - without breaking everything and everyone - on our way to a brighter, freer future.

1

“But when you talk about destruction, don't you know that you can count me out.” The Beatles

"These lads summed it up pretty nicely here (even with a few “do-wops” between lines".

2

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” - Rev. Martin Luther King Jr, August 28, 1963

"A reminder that character is the supreme value above race, identity, gender, sexuality".

3

“Revolution is not something fixed in ideology, nor is it something fashioned to a particular decade. It is a perpetual process embedded in the human spirit.” ― Abbie Hoffman

"Progress is not a one-shot deal. Like anything we want to get better, it’s going to take some input of effort and vigilance along the way".

4

"It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men" - Samuel Adams

"We’ve got the numbers. That when a passionate truth-seeking group come together, we can change the minds of many. Find your like minded crew and speak your message".

“The duty of the individual is to accept no rule, to be the initiator of his own acts, to be responsible. Only if he does so will the society live, and change, and adapt, and survive. We are not subjects of a State founded upon law, but members of a society formed upon revolution. Revolution is our obligation: our hope of evolution.” ― Ursula K. Le Guin (From The Dispossessed)

"Before you join a group that sounds like it espouses what you believe, get to know your own thoughts first. The group is only as good as its individuals. Know yourself. Educate yourself. Questions your assumptions. Encounter ideas that contradict your own to see where the truth lies. Only then do you have something to stand for".
