You Won't Dare Shut Your Eyes Listening To Citizen Kay's New Single 'Don't Blink'

If you weren’t grooving to Citizen Kay’s single ‘Funny Business’ when it dropped earlier this year, you’ve been given another chance to catch the wave with his new single ‘Dont Blink’.

‘Dont Blink’ will have you nodding your head approximately one second after you hit play and that nodding won’t stop for a second over the next two and a half minutes.

Kay definitely has his own pocket but you can hear shades of Amine, Brockhampton and even Kendrick Lamar throughout the track. The sirens in the background only add to the track sounding like a furious car chase, every time the hook starts it feels like swerving around a corner with someone in hot pursuit behind. However, the real driver in this car is most definitely the infectious bassline, with a bit of fuel being added by some head-bopping drums and of course, Kay’s energetic rhymes. All the more impressive is that the track is self-produced, so it makes a lot of sense as to why he sounds completely at home over the production.

Citizen Kay has been a pivotal figure in and around the Australian Hip Hop scene for a few years now. He’s picked up two ARIA nominations for albums Demokracy and With The People, as well as finding some international success in the US and UK. With a ton of exciting Australian Hip Hop artists emerging over the past few years such as Kwame, Arno Faraji, Yibby and so many more, tracks like this one are a reminder that Citizen Kay isn’t going anywhere.

‘Dont Blink’ explores complacency and in Kay’s own words, the ‘fine line between being understanding or patient and being complacent’. There definitely isn’t an ounce of complacency on this thing as Kay skates all over the bassline. ‘Don’t Blink’ really doesn’t leave you a second to blink as Kay’s delivery infused with the guitar heavy beat will have you wide eyed through the whole track. With two singles this year and a video for ‘Don’t Blink’ coming soon, it feels like Kay is cooking up something special, and with what we’ve heard so far, I’m very happy to wait patiently for the meal.
