In the midst of the international pop girl takeover, we've had Kaurna-Land based darling Aleksiah putting in the work in our own backyard to prove that she's ready to dethrone the leaders of the music charts. Today sees the release of her sophomore EP, Cry About It, joining her 2023 EP Who Are You When You're Not Performing? to stand as a fully flawless discography. Whether you're one of the many hearts to be captured by Aleksiah's relatable songwriting, or wondering who's the indie pop darling selling out shows across the country, give a read to hear about her new EP.
Cry About It kicks off with the punchy, cheeky 'Batsh*t, immediately setting the tone that this EP is about to contain some strong Aries emotion! 'Keep My Cool' lives up to this expectation with ease, dripping with sarcasm and pure attitude as Aleksiah lyrically crumbles under the pressure of expectations, burnout, and overwhelming societal pressure.
'Cold' has been floating around in setlists for the past few years, as one of the first songs written in the Aleksiah project! With a delightfully strong production and addictive lyrical flow, I (for one) am very excited to finally have a recorded and released version of 'Cold'.
Closing off the EP is a double dose of pure pop mastery, with 'The Hit' truly hitting too close to home for the chronic overthinkers, and 'Clothes Off', a true anthem for anyone who has a complex relationship with their body and the idea of sharing it with someone else.
This EP truly stands as a pent-up scream to a cruel and toxic society. Combatting narratives of female hysteria and obsession, societal pressure, the image of a "good girl", and more, Cry About It reframes the idea of a weak and helpless protagonist by providing power against these tropes and feelings. Aleksiah truly has cemented herself as a force within the Australian music scene, writing for the teenagers who are grappling with their changing selves, through to those who find themselves holding grudges, and general fans of insanely talented pop stars. Aleksiah's current discography will be viewed as a treasured moment in Australian pop history in the years to come.
The Cry About It Tour, featuring Chloe Parché on tour-wide support, is heading across the East Coast this July and Adelaide in August. The Brisbane show at Black Bear Lodge is officially sold out, but those lucky enough to get tickets will get to see Stelle open up the night in true style. If you're yearning to hear these songs on the biggest stages of Aleksiah's career, grab a ticket to see her open for Kelsea Ballerini this December!
