I’ve always dreamed of hosting Rage on that elusive red couch, alas that is a dream that will have to wait for another day. In the meantime though, I’m taking advantage of my journalism privileges to showcase some of my favourite Aussie music videos that have been released in the first half of 2025! Grab some popcorn, sink into that couch, and enjoy these eight music videos that I've had on repeat!
Overpopulater - Hassall
With a caffeinated buzz and pop of her signature shade of red, Hassall’s ‘Overpopulater’ music video is a charming burst of energy to start off your mornings.
Directed by: Willem Kingma
Leaving With You – Merpire
Merpire channels the indie movie dream scene with this montage of love-struck main character moments. With a dance around her bedroom and euphoric moment hanging out of the car window, this music video perfectly encapsulates the hope contained in the lyrics of "knowing you might want me still".
Directed by: Brooke Painter
In The Corner – Vera Blue
Marking her long-awaited return to the music scene, Vera Blue’s music video for ‘In The Corner’ is a magically dark fairytale. With a haunting dance that captivates viewers, Vera Blue’s performance sees her breaking her way through invisible walls in an aggressive yet spiritual manner.
Directed by: Grey Ghost (Jeremy Koren)
Loki Horror Picture Show – Selve
It’s camp, it’s charming, and it’s got a Charli XCX reference – Selve’s ‘Loki Horror Picture Show’ showcases a real-time awakening of reality for a once famed television host. With bold retro aesthetics and an ever-iconic talk show setting, this music video carries on from Selve’s ‘Breaking Into Heaven’ video, both sitting comfortably in the Selve Cinematic Universe.
Directed by: Loki Liddle & Joshua Tate
Big Ol’ Hammer – G Flip
G Flip and the team at Lez Go Auto have taken over the auto-shop for the ‘Big Ol’ Hammer’ music video. With sweaty choreography, a lecture from Fortune Feimster, and the masc lineup of our dreams, this modern-day Grease inspired clip is here to remind you to book in that overdue service!
Directed by: Anne-Sophie Bine
Get Ugly – Worm Girlz
Taking a leap away from traditional beauty standards and societal expectations through the campiness of a clown audition process, Worm Girlz make “ugly” look so good. Perhaps I have a slight bias due to my position as one of the epically talented Clownz, though this is a truly charming song and video that empowers all to embrace the parts of them that may not fit the conventions bestowed upon us by hegemonic ideals.
Directed by: Lauren Rowe
Clothes Off – Aleksiah
Aleksiah truly is the queen of aesthetic visuals, and the ‘Clothes Off’ music video is proof of this. With a montage of gorgeously curated clips, Aleksiah leans into different tropes the media perpetrates regarding female sexuality (eg. the innocent princess, the bad girl, religious avoidance), before throwing these tropes into chaos with the line “fuck it, lets have some fun”.
Directed by: Scarlett Scherer
Stronger – Lucy Korts
Reconnecting with nature after a bad experience is one of the most powerful things you can do, as exemplified by Lucy Korts in the music video for her latest single, ‘Stronger’. Reclaiming her independence and strength amidst the captivating backdrop of Bundjalung Country, Korts emphasises the healing properties of our natural settings in what truly could stand as a stunning tourism advertisement. Give a watch and be sure to pay attention to the end credits for a laugh!
Directed by: Cat Sorensen & Lucy Korts
