29 year old indie and roots talent Kim Churchill has served us another dose of his splendid musical medicine with his fresh single ‘Outta Love’. The second track from his upcoming EP The End showcases Churchill’s earthy tinges and deliciously authentic songwriting, not to mention impressive multi-instrumentalism.
‘Outta Love’ details Churchill's anguish felt when building up the reserves of courage it takes to sever the dwindled ties of relationship with someone you once loved very much.
Opening with soft, acoustic balladry, Churchill sets the song's sad lyrical precedent; something he quickly leaps out of, jumping into a twirl of twangy little guitar chords. The folksy air surrounds a quick paced monologue sung with throat tearing despair – call it desolation, buoyed by sprightly mountain breeze melodies.
I was moving feelings across so many time zones and thousands of lands / You were coming up strong, finding yourself all part of the plan / Now, does it always come and go somehow?
Though he may appear to have wandered onto the stage from a nomadic surfing pilgrimage, Churchill is no novice. Since 2014 he has been a feature at musical festivals worldwide, with Glastonbury, Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Montreal Jazz, and Telluride Blues being some noteworthy notches on his hypothetical post as well as supporting the likes of Milky Chance and Billy Bragg on tour.
Following the first single from the new EP ‘Nothing Nothing’, Kim Churchill was invited to perform on triple j’s famous Like A Version segment with a cover of Julia Jacklin’s similarly sad tune, ‘Don’t Know How to Keep Loving You’.
With the acclaim of The End’s first single and huge success of his debut album Weight_Falls which landed a spot at #6 on the ARIA charts in 2017, ‘Outta Love’ has some big shoes to fill. Luckily, we think they might be just the right size.
