Calling all lovers of dreamscape indie pop, childhood nostalgia, perfectly curated Pinterest boards, and a day of thrifting and coffee shop visits! maira is the Meanjin (Brisbane) based musical darling who’s ready to takeover your playlists and your hearts! Creating a masterful blend of indie rock and dream pop, maira’s discography is a love letter to her childhood self, with swoon-worthy aesthetics and introspective lyrical storytelling.

maira has just released her latest single ‘the void’, a track that dives into the struggles and weight of dealing with insurmountable grief. Lyrically, ‘the void’ discusses “being in denial and being unable to move past this situation where you’ve lost someone and you can’t get over it”, whilst being sonically complimented by an indie pop dreamscape with reverbed and layered saxophone and effect-heavy guitar. Sharing that there were a lot of “really fun” moments when recording this song, maira juxtaposes the heavy lyrical content with a brighter, rich sound and musical energy, adding a depth to the complex emotions surrounding the process of grief.

Taking inspiration from artists including Slow Pulp and Pale Waves, ‘the void’ was a song that came together without much hesitation. maira shares that it “was pretty easy to write, kind of just flowed out”, ‘the void’ coming to life start to finish with ease.

The gorgeous imagery and aesthetics you’re seeing alongside ‘the void’ are the product of the wonderful minds of maira and Cassie J Visuals. maira shared that she drew inspiration from the 90’s whimsy goth imagery of Cocteau Twins and Mazzy Star for the dreamy yet grunge fairy aesthetics surrounding the single. This photoshoot adds a layer of nostalgia and childhood reminiscence to ‘the void’ with visual likeness to Harmony from The Fairies and the purple fairy in Barbie Mariposa. As we know, the pop girlies love to commit to a theme, and maira’s aesthetic visual and sonic atmosphere truly sets her a step above the rest.

When asked about her favourite aspect of the local Meanjin music scene, maira shared that the tight-knit communities and wealth of support from fellow artists stand out prominently. If you’re ready to claim your OG maira fan status and support some more amazing local musicians, be sure to grab tickets to her launch show for ‘the void’ at The Junk Bar on Saturday the 29th of June, with the lovely Neish and Georgie Taylor on support.
