WAAX Drop New Single ‘I Am’

Fronted by boss ass woman Marie DeVita, Brissy alt-rock band WAAX haven’t missed a beat since the release of their debut EP ‘Holy Sick’ in 2015. Now just having announced a national tour for 2019, they’ve given us a taste of what’s to come from their first album with single ‘I Am’. Like always, we’re not disappointed.

Although still maintaining the playful intensity and angsty punk-rock nostalgia that we’ve come to expect from WAAX,  ‘I Am’ offers a look into a more vulnerable side to the five piece we’ve rarely seen before. With raw and unwavering lyrics (‘I’m only human / What can’t you understand’), ‘I Am’ approaches themes of separation and identity with an honesty that resonates with almost everyone who’s ever come out the other end of a consuming relationship (Shit has hit the fan / And I forgot the person that I am).

The message of the track is clear, however unlike other songs with a similar message (that almost always end in crying at 3AM, eating deli meat out of the fridge) the undeniably catchy riffs, upbeat melody and powerful vocals are enough to leave you with a feeling of lingering empowerment, even after the track has ended.

‘I Am’ will have you dancing in your pyjamas, singing into a hairbrush, and feeling damn good about it. If that’s not the best kind of break-up song, I don’t know what is.
